Bruce Russell Book Launch and Performance

Bruce Russell - Left-Handed Blows: Writing on Sound 1993-2009

Come join us at The High Seas for the Auckland launching of Bruce Russell's new book, plus performances by Bruce Russell and Richard Francis (followed by Russell/Francis duo) later that evening.

Book Launch : 6pm - 7.30pm
Performance : from 8.30pm

Left-handed blows gathers together, for the first time, the writings of outstanding sound artist Bruce Russell.
Russell, member of the groups The Dead C. and Handful of Dust and founder of the renowned record-labels Corpus Hermeticum and Xpressway, is reputed to have driven a substantial wedge into New Zealand music.
Besides his acclaimed work as a performer, recording artist and producer, Russell is a respected as a writer who theorises improvisation from a leftist perspective. His collected writing, fluidly unequivocal, effectively tracks the thinking of the group of free music luminaries to which he belongs.
This book consists of essays written over the last 16 years, reflecting on sound and its role in culture. It compiles online essays, liner notes, catalogue contributions and most of the previously published contents of the Russell-produced Logopandocy: the journal of vain erudition.

Left-handed blows will be launched with events in Christchurch and in Auckland at which Russell will perform.

This publication was funded by Creative New Zealand and was supported by the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology.

We were lucky enough to host a last minute gig with Delaney Davidson, Marianne Dissard and Bond St Bridge and also featuring Flip Grater. Thanks to everyone who came along!

Sam Prebble (Bond St Bridge)

Bond Street Bridge is the solo project of Sam Prebble, whose other projects include playing mandolin and twelve-string for the Broken Heartbreakers, and fiddle and keys in Reb Fountain's Bandits. He has recently been playing a bit of fiddle on releases by Dylan Storey and White Swan Black Swan as well, and has contributed strings to forthcoming released from Flip Grater and the Ghosts of Motat. He has been playing various instruments for as long as he can remember, and one of his favorite hobbies is learning to play more of them.

Marianne Dissard
Marianne Dissard:
Calexico fans will recognize Marianne as Madame to Joey Burns' lovestruck gold digger on Calexico's hit single, "Ballad of Cable Hogue" from their 2000 album "Hot Rail". Marianne’s debut album L’Entredeux (produced by Calexico’s Joey Burns) has been voted one of the Top Ten French albums of the Decade by a world jury of Francophile music writers and DJs and now New Zealand audiences will be able to hear Marianne performing live for the very first time.

Delaney Davidson

Delaney Davidson has just completed his fourth solo tour of Europe, sharing the bills of such auspicious pairings as British underground legend Holly Golightly and the reclusive Lawyer Dave, as well as dark folk cult band Wovenhand, and completed his third tour of the U.S.A in October and November 2009 where he was invited to attend the Wisconson Steel Bridge Song Festival and to join the Reverend Beatman to tour the West Coast. This tour saw the pre- release of his long awaited Voodoo Rhythm solo album (number three). The album features songs written and recorded around the world, (Wisconsin, San Francisco, Wellington, Berlin and Italy). He expects to release the album titled "Self Decapitation" officially in March 2010, and plans a release tour including Switzerland, Holland, Germany, England, France, Italy and Romania.

* Not to mention two talented parents, one who is captivated with vintage cars and pregnant nude sculpture and the other with drawing, watercolour, painting and texting her offspring.
** A controversial affair in which he was accused of being an anti- fruitist. For the record, he holds nothing personal against produce, they just don't run away very much when you devise mutilation devices for them.

La cucaracha, la cucaracha,
ya no puede caminar
porque no tiene, porque le falta
las dos patitas de atrás.
Would look best stretched around a frame.

The Underwater Collective
Untitled
Acrylic and Spray paint on wood.

Equipped with an array of mark making mechanisms, in a sea of popular signs, Underwater Collective work simultaneously, navigating between impulse and intuition to explore the chasms of the collective mind. Without fixed compositional or thematic structures, each collaborator draws from their own visual library and produces offerings (marks, symbols or suggestions) in reaction and contribution to others. The process of the painting’s growth is best described as a series of negotiations and collisions; it is an exercise in coexistence.
The Underwater Collective are having an exhibition at The High Seas from February the 14th-March 4th 2010.

Ryan Monro
Bridge over the Stream
Digital Print, correction fluid

Ryan Monro has recently graduated from Elam with an honours degree. With a particular interest in the past, his work focuses on the theme of failed ideals. The appropriation of historical images is not used to simply construct a single representation, but to acknowledge possible alternative histories, or alternative future predictions.

Erin Forsyth

Elena Wenn
A Tiger!?! In Africa!?!
Watercolour on Paper

Elena Wenn is finishing her BFA Honours course at Elam art school. Alot of her work is centered within naiive desires and nostalgia. She has mainly done paintings and drawings in her time there, with a tendency of choosing to do portrait works of famous people she admires, and of animals. She is a great believer in painting what makes her happy, and finds animals to be very soothing to paint. As she is unable to have a pet for years yet, she fills this hole in her life by collecting cute pictures of animals, and painting from the pictures. If she can't have a pet in person, she can at least fantasise about a life with pets, by painting them, which may soothe, or exacibate the desire.

Genista Jergens

Chris Cudby recently completed an MFA at Elam School of Fine Arts and is a member of Golden Axe. He’s just released a book of drawings named Passages.

Aleksandra Petrovic
Trumpet Workshop
Pen, ink and pencil on paper

Bruno Bettelheim has argued that the narratives we tell ourselves are constructed out of multiple smaller stories that are inherent in our vocabulary of experience.
We, as the storytellers, pull-apart, reconstruct, juggle, twist, condense, expand, chop into little pieces and mix up these stories to create our narratives.
These narratives come to mean something; a record of experience, a fiction of some kind, a way to communicate what can’t be communicated.
One of the most archetypal of these stories concerns adolescence and being lost. Little boys get lost in the forest…..and little girls wander around dark castles being lost as well. Being lost encapsulates a feeling of headlessness, of all logic being gone, and experiences going awry.
This sense of being lost is what I’m interested in. In my own practice, I’ve always been interested in the gaps in narratives, or the little stories that don’t make sense and can’t be utilised in the articulation of a coherent narrative. They are like the acts of decapitation themselves; without sense or logic, or reason, and without any conclusion or resolution.

Aaron Coles
Space Grave
Ink, Silverpoint and Pen on Paper

Aaron Cole, born 1984, grew up on Auckland's North Shore and graduated Elam School of Fine Arts in 2008.
He has been exhibiting and regularly participating in group shows since 2002, typically working in a variety of drawing media, although his first solo show in 2007 @ Butterfly Net was a selection of cross-stitches and sonic sculpture.
Cole's subject matter often incorporates aspects of pattern/symmetry, antique furniture, suburban landscapes and domestic lasers.

Imogen Taylor
Sea Monsters Fighting
Ink, Acrylic and Oil Stick on Paper

Imogen Taylor is an artist/waitress living and working in Auckland. Her works are usually large scale drawings on paper that are of a perverse, abjective nature. Imogen is currently working on illustrating a children's book which will be published and released in mid 2010 and hopes to begin a Masters of Fine Arts degree next year too.

Nicola Farquhar
Night Nose
Glow in the dark Fimo and Glass Marble

Nicola completed a MFA at Elam School of Fine Arts this year. She paints portraits that are partly factual and partly fictional, and most recently exhibited one of these paintings as part of a group show at Window gallery. Her contribution to 100 Clams makes light reference to her interest in the possibilities in representing the face in portraiture. It is also a bit of a homage to Meret Oppenheim's strange jewelry pieces.

Rebecca Busch
There’s plenty of daft desires
Mixed media on paper

Boe is interested in people’s stories - both ordinary and extraordinary, real and make believe;
mostly she is interested in cutting and pasting pieces of these stories to create curious, ordinary and hyper real new narratives.
She Draws inspiration from 1970’s national geographic magazines, snippets of overheard conversations, old holiday snap shots, poetic novels and the colours of nature.

Johl Dwyer

Louise Evans
Do I Look Fat in This?
Pen and Pencil on Paper

Louise Evans was formally trained in NZ to make zombies, vampires and werewolves. In Sweden she was formally trained in skinning and tanning elks, foxes, reindeers and 1 x beaver, and medieval blacksmithing, weaving and woodworking.
Her work is mainly inspired by her vivid dreams. For the furthering of her art, she ensures she eats some good cheddar before going to bed each night.

Nikolai Zhivago-Clark
Untitled

Pen on Paper

Nikolai Zhivago-Clark has just finished a giant obstacle course made of nylon pantyhose and the finest Dwarven metal forged in this galaxy. The course was littered with both radioactive glam rockers, and snooty art critics. Unfortunatley, the course has now been closed for demolition, due to structural damage and the amount of lewd artworks inscribed at its most difficult areas.
Taking inspiration from both his former jobs as a moustache trimmer and guitar tuner for various metal bands around the Auckland CBD, his work is overflowing with risque innuendo. Or is it?

Cinzah Merkens
The Floating Houseboat
Pen on Paper

Cinzah Merkens is a Auckland based artist/mess maker.
He enjoys getting crafty with anything he can get his hands on. He draws, sketches, scribbles, paints, builds and creates all sorts of useless objects which he hopes will appeal to a couple of kids somewhere for something of use.
Over the past 4 years he has exhibited in about 30 odd exhibitions and expeditions throughout Australasia, South East Asia and the U.S. Cinzah often draws directly from his own imagination and past experiences, exploring reoccurring day dreams which often consist of Childhood Nostalgia, nature, travel, and studies of slightly deranged city folk.

Alex Mitcalfe
The Holy Ridge Is Steep and Perilous
Paper collage on board

This picture is the fourth part of a series named "The Holy Ridge is Steep and Perilous". The sequence constructs idealised vistas from elements of the New Zealand landscape and explores my own attachment to the natural world, in a society characterised by mobility and atomisation.

Isabella Pachter

Untitled
Digital Print

3D Google Sketch Up Forts.
I am useless at computers, and architecture. The only thing I am really any good at is making memories and dredging them up again and again. This work is an experiment at making forts in a realm that is perhaps as foreign and unknown to me as a clean sheet hanging on the back of the couch is to a 6 year old.
