Sam Thomas-The City

Currently showing in THS' window space is an exhibition by young Auckland artist Sam Thomas titled The City. The cities in Sam's art are vast and debilitating, a trip to Paris produced Pictures of Paris, a zine of cropped scenes of the city, in Sam's characteristic marker pen style, with letters over the drawings spelling out "You are small be humble".
The body of work in The City follows this vein presenting cities as nauseating and displacing. The work consists of screenprinted cityscapes from an aerial perspective printed on thin plywood and polyurethaned. Some of the prints are slightly blurred or in multiple colours with the registration slightly off creating a shifting, unstable image. The strong smell of polyurethane intensifies their nauseating effect. Also showing is a video piece which was shot in Paris and India on Minolta Super8 film. The video dips from the sky to the ground and back to the sky, bouncing the viewer  between the two places, the effect is dizzying and unsettling.
Sam is an avid traveler and is going to Mexico for three months at the end of the year, help him get there by buying his (very affordable) prints! Photos to come. The show will be up until the 14th of November.
I'm a big fan of Sam's comics which we have a few of in the shop, especially Peach 101 and Arrowtown. He uses interesting page layouts and has a bold, unaffected style.
Here's a short excerpt from Peach 101:
