Bruce Russell Book Launch and Performance

Bruce Russell - Left-Handed Blows: Writing on Sound 1993-2009

Come join us at The High Seas for the Auckland launching of Bruce Russell's new book, plus performances by Bruce Russell and Richard Francis (followed by Russell/Francis duo) later that evening.

Book Launch : 6pm - 7.30pm
Performance : from 8.30pm

Left-handed blows gathers together, for the first time, the writings of outstanding sound artist Bruce Russell.
Russell, member of the groups The Dead C. and Handful of Dust and founder of the renowned record-labels Corpus Hermeticum and Xpressway, is reputed to have driven a substantial wedge into New Zealand music.
Besides his acclaimed work as a performer, recording artist and producer, Russell is a respected as a writer who theorises improvisation from a leftist perspective. His collected writing, fluidly unequivocal, effectively tracks the thinking of the group of free music luminaries to which he belongs.
This book consists of essays written over the last 16 years, reflecting on sound and its role in culture. It compiles online essays, liner notes, catalogue contributions and most of the previously published contents of the Russell-produced Logopandocy: the journal of vain erudition.

Left-handed blows will be launched with events in Christchurch and in Auckland at which Russell will perform.

This publication was funded by Creative New Zealand and was supported by the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology.

Delaney Davidson/Marianne Dissard/Bond St Bridge gig

We were lucky enough to host a last minute gig with Delaney Davidson, Marianne Dissard and Bond St Bridge and also featuring Flip Grater. Thanks to everyone who came along!

Sam Prebble (Bond St Bridge)

Bond Street Bridge is the solo project of Sam Prebble, whose other projects include playing mandolin and twelve-string for the Broken Heartbreakers, and fiddle and keys in Reb Fountain's Bandits. He has recently been playing a bit of fiddle on releases by Dylan Storey and White Swan Black Swan as well, and has contributed strings to forthcoming released from Flip Grater and the Ghosts of Motat. He has been playing various instruments for as long as he can remember, and one of his favorite hobbies is learning to play more of them.

Marianne Dissard
Marianne Dissard:
Calexico fans will recognize Marianne as Madame to Joey Burns' lovestruck gold digger on Calexico's hit single, "Ballad of Cable Hogue" from their 2000 album "Hot Rail". Marianne’s debut album L’Entredeux (produced by Calexico’s Joey Burns) has been voted one of the Top Ten French albums of the Decade by a world jury of Francophile music writers and DJs and now New Zealand audiences will be able to hear Marianne performing live for the very first time.

Delaney Davidson

Delaney Davidson has just completed his fourth solo tour of Europe, sharing the bills of such auspicious pairings as British underground legend Holly Golightly and the reclusive Lawyer Dave, as well as dark folk cult band Wovenhand, and completed his third tour of the U.S.A in October and November 2009 where he was invited to attend the Wisconson Steel Bridge Song Festival and to join the Reverend Beatman to tour the West Coast. This tour saw the pre- release of his long awaited Voodoo Rhythm solo album (number three). The album features songs written and recorded around the world, (Wisconsin, San Francisco, Wellington, Berlin and Italy). He expects to release the album titled "Self Decapitation" officially in March 2010, and plans a release tour including Switzerland, Holland, Germany, England, France, Italy and Romania.
